How to keep your cheque register

Every cheque you get or give is listed with its date and status. Post-dated cheques are not forgotten, and a bounced cheque puts the bills back into dues by itself.

Step by step

  1. Add your business once. In My data.
  2. Record a cheque received. Cheque received: customer, amount, cheque no., cheque date, bank, and tick the bills it pays.
  3. Record a cheque given. Cheque given: supplier, amount, cheque no., cheque date, bills paid.
  4. Update the status. Received starts as Received, not deposited; then Deposited, then Cleared. A cheque you gave stays Given, not cleared until it clears.
  5. If it bounces. Tap Bounced: the payment comes out of the books and the bills are due again. Add bank charges as an expense.
  6. Watch the dates. Cheques due in the next 7 days lists post-dated cheques to deposit and your own about to reach the bank.

Worked example

A customer gives a cheque of ₹28,320 dated 15 November. Record it on 6 November; on 15 November deposit it; on 17 November mark Cleared. Had it bounced on 18 November, the invoice would be due again and Dues would show it.

Rules and dates

A cheque is valid for 3 months from its date. After a bounce, a legal notice under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act must be sent within 30 days of the bank's return memo; take advice.
